Glenmorangie Lasanta 12 Review

This is Whiskytimes Glenmorangie Lasanta 12 Review. This is the one that’s matured in sherry casks for an extra two years. It is one of the first few whiskies I’ve come across that I’ve genuinly been able to happily drink, glass after glass.

However it’s also a chance for me to explore the interesting point of whisky expressions…

Whisky Expressions

Glenmorangie Lastanta is what I’ve learned is called a ‘whisky expression’… so what is a ‘whisky expression’ I thought? and why do they exist?

What are they?:

Usually the word expression can be read as a ‘variation’. In this example the Glenmorangie lasanta is a variation of the 10 years original Glenmorangie which is then matured for two extra years in Oloroso sherry butts to give it a different taste and aroma. There is also the Quinta Ruban, Nectar’dOr which are the same thing but finished differently.

It seems there are a few ways to think of these:

  1. They just taste good and that’s enough of a reason for them to exist
  2. They add variety to a whisky distillers line-up
  3. They are just experiments that went well
  4. They cover up a bad whiskies less attractive qualities

In this Case:

In this case the Glenmorangie lastanta  tastes good, add’s variety to the distilleries offering and in my mind a great idea. By adding extra awesomeness to an already very good standard whisky, glenmorangie have hit whisky marketing gold. It certainly doesn’t cover up a bad whisky and gives fans a chance to try another expression of the original whisky.

Review of Glenmorangie Lasanta 12 Years?

Like I said at the start this is very easy to drink whisky…

Smell – Sweet sherry, honey raisin short bread with a slightly boozy burn (water it down) to remove.

Taste – Warming sherry with sweetness that holds off until later where it rewards you with a delicious drinkable, light warm spiced sultana whisky finish. Concentrate and you can pick out creamy hazel nuts through the finish.

Where it takes me – I do enjoy sharing this one with my fiancée and she is visiting her parents right now so it is reminding me of her. Sad. I know.

If you like this you might also like Glenmorangie Nectar D’or or Glenmorangie Artein.

Review of Glenmorangie Lasanta 12 Years:

Tulip glass, 5 cl of The Lasanta, neat.

Sweet sherry and foggy forest morning aroma. Complex mouthfeel with slightly more oil than butter. A blossoming cadence of hazelnut, vanilla and spice preceded an extraordinarily long finish of oak, fruit and leaf. Slight smoke and only a rumor of peat – very sunny, yet bold. Immensely satisfying and joins other fine single malts as a perfect aperitif, meal companion, or evening libation. After the initial tasting, I paired this gorgeous scotch with a plate of freshly homemade Creole beef pot roast.

    Highly enjoyed and recommended.
